The project concerns the remodeling and renovation of an apartment on Morkentau Street, in the historic center of Thessaloniki.
The typical interior layout of the apartment in the 70’s included separate rooms for both public and private spaces. Maintaining most of the interior masonry, the kitchen was functionally transferred and integrated with the living room in an open plan layout, while in its place a room was designed mainly for office or guest house, which communicates with the entrance of the apartment through an internal wooden window. The rest of the rooms remained in their original layout with the exception of the second bathroom which was integrated in the master bedroom along with a dressing room.
The design philosophy was based on the use of natural materials such as oak wood in all custom made constructions and natural mortars of the company Kourasanit. The application of the mortar in natural earth tones on most floors, masonry, doors and ceilings gives a special character, homogenizes the spaces and emphasizes the wooden constructions of the apartment.
Acting as an escape from the city itself, the apartment offers a sense of calm away from the hustle and bustle of the streets.
